NURSERY CURRICULUM

AGES:

Children whose third birthday falls on October 31st or before October 31st of the current year are eligible to attend Nursery.

NURSERY CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

The curriculum is designed to develop and support children's physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional growth through an eclectic approach that prepares young children for future academic success. Some of the target skills in the Nursery level:

Gross and Fine Motor Skills
  • Manage gross motor movements with confidence

  • Write letters of the alphabet and numerals independently using a comfortable tripod grip.

  • Handle materials such as scissors, glue, crayons properly and effectively

Cognitive and Language Skills
  • Language Arts

    • Identify and recognize the form and sounds of the English alphabet

    • Sight-read basic words such as I, am, is, are, the, etc.

    • Read c-v-c words, and simple phrases and sentences.

  • Math

    • Show understanding of different concepts such as comparison (big-small, long-short, heavy-light, etc.)

    • Identify and recognize numerals 0-20

    • Rote count independently up to 30

    • Count with 1-to-1 correspondence

    • Skip count by 2s

    • Add numbers with sum up to 10

  • Social Studies

    • Identify and recognize information about self, family, community, and the environment

  • Mandarin (basic)

    • Sing simple Mandarin songs

Socio-Emotional Skills
  • Display competence in performing tasks for self such setting own snack on the table, washing own hands, putting on shoes independently, etc.

  • Identify and recognize feelings, needs and wants, and communicate them appropriately

  • Display a positive attitude towards school and learning

KINDERGARTEN 1

AGES:

Children whose fourth birthday falls on October 31st or before October 31st of the current year are eligible to attend Kindergarten 1.

HOURS:

Monday – Friday
8:00 – 12:00 noon

K1 CURRICULUM:

Social Studies and Sciences

All activities promote awareness through different hands on exploration through related videos and songs, as well as links to pictures, worksheets and activities ( art activities, social interactions, experiments and educational trips)
Topics include:

  • Myself (Basic Body parts, Senses, and proper hygiene)

  • Life science ( Living things basic needs, living things life cycle, Plants and animals)

  • Earth and Space science (Different physical properties of land and water forms, Weather, Solar System)

  • My Community (Transportations, Community helpers)

  • Countries (People, Costumes, Flags,famous places and landmarks)

  • Different Holidays (National Symbols)

  • Math

All activities aim to develop critical and higher order thinking skills through hands on and varied developmentally appropriate methods. Topics include:

  • one-to-one correspondence

  • mastery of numbers and counting from 0-100

  • numerical and word forms

  • sequencing, comparing numbers and using equality signs

  • basic and complete shapes, basic polygons

  • measurement (sorting and classifying objects)

  • addition and subtraction of single/double digit numbers,

  • number concepts for place value

  • telling time by the hour and half hour

  • recognizing single and double patterns

  • skip counting by 10's , 5's and 2's using the number line

 

LANGUAGE ARTS CURRICULUM

All activities are geared to further develop listening, writing and talking skills in English through appropriate and engaging activities focusing on developing skills below:

  • The child expresses thoughts, experiences, wants, needs and feelings through phrases and sentences in English.

  • The child understands and follows written and verbal two or more step directions successively in English.

  • The child masters the alphabet letters (name, form and sound) to be able to read and spell CVC words, common consonant blends, diphthongs and digraphs in words, phrases and sentences and matches it to pictures for comprehension.

  • The child uses common pronouns in conversations and nouns in naming pictures through daily conversations and discussions with peers and teachers.

  • The child reads common sight words and high frequency words in sentences and stories through the GINN READER, BOB BOOKS and OXFORD READING TREE PROGRAM BOOKS.

 

GROSS AND MOTOR SKILLS

This area focuses on the body and on physical experience and is an integral part of the educational process. Learning opportunities are created through the different movement experiences, challenges and play. With these activities, positive attitudes such as cooperating with others, building self-esteem, accepting success and failure as well as playing fairly are also developed. This aims to contribute to their overall development to help them lead full, active and healthy lives.

  • Walking in Line

  • Running

  • Throwing and Catching a ball with two hands

  • Climbing playground equipment

  • Using writing and art materials correctly

PRE-NURSERY CURRICULUM

AGES

Children whose turn to be 18 months before October 31st and haven’t turned to be 3 years old yet till October 31st will be placed in Toddler – Pre-Nursery Class.

TODDLER AND PRE-NURSERY CURRICULUM OVERVIEW:

Language Skills

The child responds and makes social greetings, expresses needs and wants, repeats simple rhymes and songs, attends to short story telling, follow simple oral directions and repeats words/phrases in English.

Cognitive Skills

The child recognizes objects in the environment, letter sounds, numbers and names colors and shapes.

Self-Help Skills

The child puts her own belongings in his/her cubby hole, return materials in their proper places, washes and dries hands, takes off his/her shoes and sets his/her own table for snacks.

Motor skills

The child responds to simple dance steps, imitates creative body movements (animals, transportation, etc.), manipulates blocks, opens and closes box/containers and uses different art materials.

Socialization Skills

The child enjoys school activities, shares and take turns with his/her friends and recognizes people in school.

KINDERGARTEN 2

AGES:

Children whose fifth birthday falls on October 31st or before October 31st of the current year are eligible to attend Kindergarten 2.

K2 CURRICULUM:

Social Studies/Science 

Each week Kindergarten 2 students are introduced to many Social Studies and Science topics as well. They are encouraged to be engaged in integrating the natural flow of activities in school and at home. Different learning activities give opportunities for the students' artistic self-expression like drawing painting, collage-making and exploration activities in their environment.

Moreover, it aims to develop good work habits like working independently, following directions, listening attentively to others and by stimulating different senses by participating actively in different classroom activities.

Topics include home: (self, family, friends), my community (community helpers, holiday celebrations); natural sciences (animal, plants, weather, planet earth, solar system); Science and Technology; health and safety (body parts, food groups, different clothings and kinds of transportation).

Math

Math in Kindergarten 2 aims to show understanding in the following categories such as Number Sense (count, read, write, compare, and order whole numbers to 100, know the place value of numbers and comparing numbers), Measurement and Geometry (compare the length, weight, and volume of objects, tell time to the nearest half hour, an hour, quarter to and quarter past; name polygons and their number of sides). Data Analysis (use of pictures, bar graphs, tally charts) and Computation (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division); sum or difference of 2 whole numbers up to three digits; simple multiplication and division with the use of illustrations and manipulatives.

Language Arts

The Kindergarten 2 curriculum is designed to engage students in a range of experiences and interactions. It creates opportunities for balance and integration among the six strands of Language Arts which include: speaking and listening, reading and viewing and writing and representing.

Topics included in the given subject areas are as follows:

  • Decoding (CVC, Word Patterns, Rhyming Words, Words with Silent e, sight words)
